Examination: Posture and muscle imbalances often contribute to the development of temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ). Motions of the neck are often restricted and it is common for headaches to be a component of the TMJ syndrome. A full musculoskeletal examination is conducted and motions of the jaw including excursion, noises and quality of the movements. Ergonomic assessment may be needed to determine if work postures both at the job site and at home are contributing factors
Treatment Interventions: Manual therapy including approaches such as stretching, joint manipulation, soft tissue mobilization and manual distraction are options based on findings from the exam conducted..
Modalities: If pain or inflammation is present, there are several modalities we can choose from to alleviate these conditions. Ultrasound, electrotherapy, laser, iontophoresis, mechanical traction, heat and ice are all options available in our clinic and determined by the physical exam.
Therapeutic Exercise: Stretching and guided strengthening using neuromuscular principles are chosen based on the presenting complaint and physical exam. Home exercise programs are written, updated and reviewed with patients after they are given. Exercises specific to the jaw and head are included. Relaxation training is often incorporated into the home program.
