Spine Care

Spinal mobilization became a physical therapy treatment option in the United States when Stanley Paris, Phd, PT, FAPTA emmigrated to the United States from New Zealand in 1966 to teach at Boston University. While there, he applied his understanding and self designed treatment and manipulation techniques to spinal care. He became curious and started to perform research on the spine and its arthrokinematics. Dr.Paris later helped to establish the first Masters of Physical Therapy program at Emory University in Atlanta. Over time, he established the University of St.Augustine. His graduate programs and continued emphasis on research and scientifically based treatment options are available through continuing education for physical therapists.

Spine care therapy and assessment

Dr. Debra Q. Virtanen,PT, MS, DPT has been fortunate enough to attend the series of courses offered for Spinal Assessment and Treatment Intervention provided by Dr.Paris and his colleagues. Through this training and a number of other courses and experiences, she skillfully assesses spinal motion and posture while identifying abnormalities contributing to the root cause of back and neck pain. Treatment options are chosen based on these assessments along with the patient’s history to provide State of the Art care for those of you suffering from spinal complaints.

Another treatment method which is again gaining notoriety, is the McKenzie Method. Robin McKenzie, CNZM, O.B.E., FCSP,Dip.MT, Dip.MDT also a New Zealander and colleague of Dr.Paris’, promotes the self treatment of back disorders. His theory is that as we move or remain in postures which aggravate the spine, we lose the normal mechanical alignment and spinal motions. These problems in turn, can create back and limb pain. He created a method of evaluation to determine the source of the mechanical disorder and uses repeated movements to relieve pain and improve range of motion. His goal is to “centralise” the complaint and provide the patient with a method to self treat and learn to prevent recurrences.  Rebecca Kane, PT,MS, cert. MDT is certified in the McKenzie method.
