Debra Virtanen served as a volunteer with the Arthritis Foundation for over 10 years. She was the education chairperson then the overall chairperson. As a result, her knowledge and empathy for those suffering with arthritis has grown. Did you know there are more than 130 types of arthritis? It is not only a disease of wear and tear (osteoarthritis) but it can affect children (juvenile arthritis). There are many systemic types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis results from joints that have been used abnormally or injured in sports or accidents causing damage to the cartilage. The systemic types occur in the body systems. They affect connective tissue and can affect organs depending on the type. A rheumatologist can properly diagnose the specific type of systemic arthritis. Typically, the primary care doctor manages osteoarthritis until injections or surgeries are needed and an orthopedist is consulted.
At Riverfront Physical Therapy, we assess the joints and movements that are affected by the arthritis. Functional limitations in daily self-care, mobility and work skills are often affected by arthritis. These are also assessed and incorporated into the program plan of care. Depending on the type of arthritis that you are diagnosed with, a comprehensive physical therapy intervention program can include the use of gentle motion, light strengthening and modalities to manage pain and inflammation. Since arthritis often causes anxiety and pain, a relaxation program may be instructed.
